Indoor/Outdoor string lights - Lights from holiday decorations such as inflatables must be removed before they can be recycled. Other materials from items including metal, plastic, fabric etc. should be thrown away or recycled separately.

Four Free Options for Recycling Your Live Holiday Tree

  1. Curbside Collection

    Leave your holiday tree curbside next to your grey green waste cart by 6:00am the weeks of December 31st (excluding January 1), January 14th, and January 28th. If your tree is taller than six feet, please cut it into 3-foot or shorter pieces. Please see our annual collection schedule to verify your green waste collection days.

  2. Green Waste Cart

    After cutting your tree into 3-foot or shorter pieces, place those pieces in your grey green waste cart. Make sure the trimmed pieces fit completely into the cart with the lid closed.

  3. Self Haul to Elder Creek

    Take your holiday tree, free of charge, to the Elder Creek Transfer and Recovery Station at 8642 Elder Creek Road, Sacramento, between Florin-Perkins Road and Watt Avenue.

  4. Self Haul to SWCC

    Take your holiday tree, free of charge to the Special Waste Collection Center at 9255 Disposal Lane, Elk Grove 95624. Open Sunday to Wednesday 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Preparing Your Holiday Tree for Recycling

  • Remove tree from stand.
  • Remove ornaments, lights, nails, tinsel and metal rod supports from trees.
  • Cut trees taller than 6 feet into 3-foot or shorter pieces
  • Artificial, flocked or "live" trees with root balls will not be accepted.
