Press Release - Wet, Cold Temps Prompt Elk Grove Warming Center Opening on Wednesday

cold temp gauge and logosCold temperatures and windchill factor are prompting the City of Elk Grove and Cosumnes Community Services District to open a nightly warming center at the Wackford Community Complex, 9014 Bruceville Road, in Elk Grove beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, February 3, and extending through Friday, February 5.

The warming center is available for residents who may lack shelter or adequate home heating systems. The warming center will operate nightly through Friday, February 5 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The need to keep the warming center open will be reassessed at 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. and the center may be closed for the evening if there are no occupants or any indication someone may be on the way.

The warming center will offer seating and a heated room providing shelter from the cold temperatures. The facility cannot accommodate pets. The warming center will be staffed by CSD, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Volunteers in Policing (VIP) volunteers.

Following California Department of Health COVID-19 recommended protocols, temperature screenings will be required for entry. Visitors to the warming center will also be required to wear face coverings and maintain six feet of social distancing from others. Masks will be provided to those who need them.
