Posted: 07/20/2020

Why Buy Local Heart LogoAt a time when businesses are struggling to survive during mandated closures and restrictions, every dollar spent locally helps. To encourage socially conscious consumer spending and aid Elk Grove’s economic recovery, the City of Elk Grove has launched a campaign to answer the question, “Why Buy Local?”

“When you shop within our city limits, you’re not just helping that business, you’re keeping people employed and supporting local families,” explained Elk Grove’s Economic Development Director, Darrell Doan. “We took the opportunity to showcase members of our ElkGrove business community to remind residents that this effort isn’t just about economics, but it’s about supporting our neighbors.”

A variety of print and digital materials are starting to appear throughout the city that showcase Elk Grove businesses and some of the people behind them, including:

  • Bel Air #525, Alana Washington
  • Elk Grove Bike Shop, Kevin Huffman
  • Flatlands Brewing, Andrew Mohsenzadegan
  • MacQUE’S BBQ, Michael Thomas
  • Rescate Coffee, Ladd Casillas
  • School of Rock, Jason Kline and Cecilia Yi
  • Skip’s Music, Kurt R. Hamlin
  • Todo Un Poco, Marie Mertz

Sales tax revenue is the single largest source of funding for the City’s budget. Money from each local purchase is reinvested in the community to pay for things like animal services, roadway improvements, and social programs. Buying groceries, clothes, dine in or takeout, fuel, or a haircut, offers an opportunity to support local businesses. For details on the “Why Buy Local?” campaign, visit
