Press Release - Elk Grove Animal Shelter to close for all non-essential services

Posted: 03/19/2020

For the duration of Sacramento County’s shelter in place order, Elk Grove Animal Shelter will be closed for all services except lost pet redemption and stray animal sheltering. We have temporarily halted non-essential services to better focus our resources to protect the Elk Grove community and to support the prevention of COVID-19.

Animal Service officers will continue to respond to emergency calls for service including dangerous dogs, sick or injured animals, police assistance, animals creating a hazard, bite reports, animal cruelty investigations, domestic animals in the roadway and dead animal disposal.

Essential services will be offered in the following ways:

Return to Owners (RTO)

Animals who have been picked up as strays can be reunited with their owners during our regular lobby hours 12pm – 6pm Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays), by appointment only. Please utilize the following link or call us at (916) 687-3042 to let us know you will be coming. https://EGASschedualing.as.me/RTO

Stray Animals

We recommend using online resources such as PetHarbor, PawBoost, Nextdoor, Elk Grove Pets Lost and Found and neighborhood social pages and groups to help locate owners. If you are unable to care for the pet while searching for an owner, stray animals can still be brought to the shelter during regular lobby hours. Please call (916) 687-3042 to arrange an appointment.

Licensing

Pet licenses are only being accepted by mail or online. We will not conduct any in person license transactions at the shelter. Because of this we are giving an additional 30-day grace period before a late fee will be assessed.

Owner Surrenders

Pet owners considering surrendering their pets should delay doing so. If this is not possible, please contact us for additional resources.

Adoptions

Adoptions are suspended until the Public Health Department order is lifted.

We are managing our animal population closely, and will remain committed to our mission, vision, and values as we attempt to navigate this most difficult time. If you would like to help by fostering an animal for short term or long term, please sign up online.

If you have any questions please reach out via email at animalservices@elkgrovepd.org or via phone at (916) 687-3042.
