Council Member Steve Detrick Appointed Vice Mayor

Elk Grove’s second directly elected mayor, Steve Ly, took the oath of office tonight at the Elk Grove City Council meeting. Council members Steve Detrick and Darren Suen also took the oath of office tonight to mark the start of their four-year terms.

The Elk Grove City Council appointed Steve Detrick to preside as the City’s Vice Mayor. This appointment took effect immediately.

Mayor Ly was first elected to the Elk Grove City Council in 2014 and served as the City’s Vice Mayor throughout 2016. He has represented the City on several regional boards including the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District, City Council/Elk Grove Unified School District 2 x 2, and the City Council/City of Sacramento 2 x 2.

Elk Grove voters approved the directly elected Mayor format in 2010. The Mayor serves a two-year term. The first directly elected Mayor, Gary Davis, passed the gavel to Mayor Ly and was formally recognized for a decade of service on the Council tonight.

Mayor Ly previously represented District 4. Council will deliberate on how to fill the vacancy in District 4 for the remaining two years of the four year term. The Council District map is available on the City’s website.

Mayor Ly has resided in Elk Grove with his family for more than 18 years. In addition to his service on the Council, Mayor Ly previously served as a trustee on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Directors. As a nationally recognized educator, Mayor Ly provides academic support to foster youth students and young people in juvenile hall. He has devoted his career to educating young people and creating the communities that help them thrive.

Mayor Ly’s commitment to serving his community has earned him numerous awards including the Invictus Youth Impact Award, TOFA Community Leadership Award, KVIE Hero of the Year Award, California State Assembly and Senate Commendation, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Day of Peace Award-Sacramento County Probation Department, and the School Violence Prevention Award-Sacramento County Criminal Justice Cabinet. Mayor Ly has also previously served on the Asian Pacific School Board Members Association (APISBMA), Carroll Elementary School Site Council, California State Advisory Council on Refugee Assistance and Services, Elk Grove Optimist Club and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Community Advisory Board.
