Railroad Work to Close Elk Grove Blvd May 16-19

Traffic Advisory: Railroad Crossing Work to Close Elk Grove Blvd May 16-19

Posted: 05/09/2016

Union Pacific Railroad has scheduled urgent repairs to their railroad crossing at Elk Grove Boulevard in Old Town that will result in the closure of Elk Grove Boulevard between First Street and School Street beginning next Monday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19.

This closure will impact all eastbound and westbound through traffic on Elk Grove Boulevard travelling between Elk Grove-Florin Road and Waterman Road including emergency and pedestrian traffic. A full 24-hour closure will be in place between First Avenue and School Street over the four day period. Access for all property owners and businesses will be maintained.

Increased Travel Times & Detours: Through traffic is advised to avoid this area during the closure period. Roadway users are advised to use alternative routes until project work is completed (see detour map). Detour signs and electronic message boards will be in place to alert motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists about the temporary closure.

Construction Activities: Project work to repair the railroad crossing will be performed by Union Pacific work crews as part of a regional repair project. Similar repairs resulted in the closure of Calvine Road for three days in May 2015. With two sets of tracks at this location, train traffic will continue during construction. One track will be kept live while the other is being repaired.

Repair work is also anticipated for Bond Road and Elk Grove-Florin Rd crossings in June 2016, however, exact dates are not yet available.

Closure Period: The City of Elk Grove understands the challenges and inconvenience that commuters, residents, businesses, and pedestrians will experience during the closure period and ask for the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to complete this project as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Re-opening: This stretch of Elk Grove Boulevard is expected to re-open on Friday, May 20.  The closure is not expected to impact preparations for the Old Town Elk Grove Chili Festival scheduled on Saturday, May 21 at the Old Town Plaza.
