City Lauds Opportunities for Economic Growth

Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis joined California Northstate University (CNU) President, Dr. Alvin Cheung, on CNU’s Elk Grove campus today to announce accreditation of CNU’s College of Medicine by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

“This accreditation represents a major step forward for California Northstate University and the City of Elk Grove,” said Mayor Davis.  “CNU’s presence in Elk Grove provides real opportunities for economic growth.”

City officials assisted with CNU’s move from Rancho Cordova to its Elk Grove campus in 2014.  Last month, the school awarded degrees to its first Elk Grove pharmacy school graduating class of 98 students.

With its new accreditation, CNU is only the fifth private university in the State of California to operate both a pharmacy school and medical school under one roof.  Medical school enrollment is expected to include up to 40 students in the first year and 160 students within four years.

“With the addition of medical school students and faculty, we are one step closer to bringing a more balanced jobs to housing ratio in Elk Grove and generating significant gains for the City in employment, education, and consumer spending,” said Davis.  “We congratulate President Cheung and his staff on their success and look forward to a long and successful working relationship with CNU.”

Medical school classes are scheduled to begin in September.
