Licensing and Microchipping

Why a Pet License Should Be Your Priority

If your pet gets lost, a license tag on your pet’s collar is one of the fastest methods to reunite you and your cat or dog. Additionally, the license helps everyone know that your dog is a member of the family and is loved. Licensing your pet is one of the first steps in assuring the health and safety of your pet. The Law requires every person owning, possessing, keeping, harboring or having custody of any dog or cat over four (4) months old shall obtain a license for each dog or cat and appropriate license fees shall be paid annually and obtained within 30 days of acquisition of the pet or within 30 days of moving into the city (EGMC 8.03.01A)

Your license shows that you are a responsible pet owner. It lets people know that your pet companion has received required vaccinations that protect your pet from rabies.

Read first before starting licensing

Proof of Rabies Vaccination and Spay/Neuter

Most Veterinarians located in the city of Elk Grove provide us with a copy of your pet’s rabies certificate. However, we do ask if you are licensing by mail, please include a photocopy of your pet's current rabies vaccination certificate and proof of spay/neuter (if applicable). If you are licensing online, you should upload your pet's current vaccination certificate and proof of spay/neuter (if applicable) in the licensing portal. This will help ensure timely and efficient processing of your pet’s license.

How to Quality for a 1-year or 3-year license

The length of a license is dependent on the length of the rabies vaccination. A license cannot expire after the rabies vaccination expiration. In order for a license to be valid, the rabies vaccination must also be valid for the same period of time as the license.

  • If the rabies vaccination is valid for the next 3 years, then you are eligible for a 3-year license.
  • If the rabies vaccination expires in less than 3 years, then you only qualify for the 1-year license.

It is important to understand that a 1-year license may not last exactly 12 months and that a 3-year license may not last exactly 36 months. A license expires on the anniversary date (i.e. same day and month) of when the rabies vaccination was given. The license expiration is not based on the day when the license was purchased.

What happens after purchasing?

If the pet is being licensed for the first time or you order a replacement license tag, the license tag will be mailed to you within 7-10 days.

If you renew an existing license, a new license tag will NOT be issued. Please re-use your original license tag. A new certificate will be issued via email.
