Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program

The City of Elk Grove's Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program is currently accepting nominations of exemplary individuals for possible future street name use. The Program was created to recognize the number of individuals who have served our community and country. By naming a city street in their honor, we hope to promote public awareness of the individual and show our appreciation for their outstanding contributions.

Program Details

The City of Elk Grove's Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program is currently accepting nominations of exemplary individuals for possible future street name use. The Program was created to recognize the number of individuals who have served our community and country. By naming a city street in their honor, we hope to promote public awareness of the individual and show our appreciation for their outstanding contributions.

Program Criteria

Standing / Status
Eligible candidates must be deceased, though they need not have died while serving.
Branch of Service
Eligible military candidates include those having served in Military Departments as defined under Department of Defense Directive 5100.1 which include Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy and upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy. Eligible candidates must also be considered Veterans. 

Eligible candidates also include individuals of earlier communities who served the greater Elk Grove area and immigrants to Elk Grove who served in the armed forces of allied nations during wartime. 

Eligible Public Safety personnel include Police Officer and Fire Fighter candidates that served in Elk Grove as well as personnel who died in the line of duty.
Level of Service
Eligible military candidates must have been honorably discharged. Police or Fire personnel may not have been terminated for cause from employment.
Relationship to Elk Grove
Eligible military candidates must have once resided in Elk Grove, as it is now known or was considered Elk Grove during the candidate’s lifetime. 

Eligible Police Officer and Fire Fighter candidates must have served in Elk Grove, regardless of whether they lived in Elk Grove or died while in the line of duty.
Nomination
Family members must not object to nominations of their eligible relatives. Any family member objection issued prior to the naming of a street in honor of someone will invalidate their Nomination Form.
Verification
Documentary proof of a candidate’s service must accompany the Nomination Form. Proof may come in a variety of forms, but should be verifiable without requiring an excessive amount of staff time. The DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) is the City’s preferred documentation for military candidates. Before January 1, 1950, several similar forms were used by the military services, including the WD AGO 53, WD AGO 55, WD AGO 53-55, NAVPERS 553, NAVMC 78PD, and the NAVCG 553.

Eligible candidates must meet all listed Program Criteria as well as undergo the City’s standard Addressing Guidelines and Improvements Standards Review.

Addressing Guidelines

The City of Elk Grove’s Public Works department conducts a standard review according to Addressing Guidelines and Improvement Standards. Eligible candidates must meet all Program Criteria as well as well as undergo the City’s standard Addressing Guidelines and Improvement Standards Review.

Military Records

If you've been discharged from military service, your personnel files are stored at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). They are the official repository for records of military personnel who have been discharged from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. Request copies of Military Personnel Records.

Street Sign Designs

The City of Elk Grove conducted public outreach with hundreds of residents to create the following street sign designs for the program. These signs will stand to represent the tremendous sacrifice and honor that our Veterans, Police Officers and Fire Fighters experience on a daily basis.

Frequently Asked Program Questions

What happens when the candidate's name is put on the Program Names List?

The list is available for developers to select names from for subdivisions. When names are removed from the list for inclusion in a subdivision, Public Works will notify the original Nominator of the action.

When will the candidate's name be removed from the list and a street sign installed?

The City has no control over when the name will be removed from the list, if ever. It is at the sole discretion of developers to select and utilize names from the list for inclusion in subdivisions. Some names may never be selected.

Will there be a dedication ceremony when the street sign is installed?

No, the City is unable to hold dedication ceremonies for signs that are included in this program due to the volume of ceremonies that would be required. However, when names are removed from the list for inclusion in a subdivision, Public Works will notify the original Nominator of the action.

Am I allowed to put a makeshift memorial commemorating important dates such as a birthday or anniversary near the street sign?

Memorials will be removed in accordance with standard City procedures.

Can I change the look of the street sign?

No, all street signs under this program shall be identical.

I'm a non-family member nominating someone for the program but the Nomination Form asks me to identify the next of kin. Why?

The City wants to notify the next of kin to ensure the family of the individual does not object to the request. The City will notify the next of kin after the Nomination Form is received via U.S. mail.
