The scope of the City of Elk Grove Multicultural Committee is as follows:
- Research and plan an Elk Grove multicultural festival that will be held in 2012.
- Educate the community about the City of Elk Grove's cultural diversity
- Advise on best practices for conducting outreach to various ethnic communities and faith-based organizations in Elk Grove
- Provide guidance to the City Council on issues impacting multicultural communities
The Committee will also provide input and help promote the diversity awareness effort that
was launched in August 2011. The program is designed to recognize and celebrate the City’s
rich cultural diversity. More information about the program is available at

The Elk Grove City Council formally established the ten member Multicultural Committee on September 14, 2011.

‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’ Community Discussion

On Tuesday, April 16, the City of Elk Grove’s Multicultural Committee commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. The influential essay articulates the principle that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," and is a powerful reminder of how the struggle for civil rights had its start. Committee member and CSUS Foreign Languages Department Chair Dr. Bernice Bass de Martinez read King’s letter, explain the significance, and facilitate a community discussion.
