Volunteer Opportunities

 

SeniorsIn the course of investigating both housing and zoning violations, our program often encounters residents who are living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions. Some of these cases involve residents who are older or disabled, and are unable to change or improve their situation due to physical and/or monetary difficulties. Our program has recently become aware of two organizations that provide some assistance in these situations through community volunteers.

Direct link to Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment AgencyThe Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency provides assistance in the form of minor home repairs through a program called HARPS (Home Assistance Repair Program for Seniors). This service is available to senior homeowners (60 and older) with limited incomes. The homeowner is asked to provide the parts to be added or installed, and a skilled volunteer provides the labor. Direct link to Rebuilding TogetherRebuilding Together, a part of the Christmas in April program, provides assistance to low income seniors, disabled persons and families through a program called Safe at Home. This program assists in the installation of equipment such as handrails and grab bars, smoke and fire detectors, anti-skid mats, ramps, etc. Volunteers with minor carpentry skills are given a 2 hour training session and are asked to provide between 4-8 hours a month. While this program is more specific in its assistance, it covers a larger segment of the community and gives many people a chance to live a safer, more comfortable life.
