Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Dignity Health planning to build a new hospital in Elk Grove and where will it be located?

Dignity Health has served Elk Grove and the surrounding communities for more than 45 years and is now making Elk Grove’s first hospital a reality. We have been looking at building a hospital in Elk Grove since 2010 and are excited to move forward with the project, which will be located at Wymark Road and Elk Grove Boulevard. This location is perfectly situated to serve all of Elk Grove’s neighborhoods, and its service area will extend from south Sacramento to Galt.

What will happen to Methodist Hospital once the new Elk Grove hospital opens?

Methodist Hospital would require significant and costly renovations to meet California’s 2030 earthquake safety requirements. Dignity Health determined that building a new facility less than five minutes away from the existing hospital will best serve our patients and the region in the years to come. Methodist Hospital’s medical team will be transferred to the new Elk Grove Hospital. Dignity Health will continue to own the property but has not yet determined how the building will be used.

How big will the new hospital be?

Decades of experience have been invested to plan a hospital that will meet the needs of Elk Grove’s residents now and in the future. The first phase of development includes a new, 200,000 square foot, 100-bed hospital equipped with the latest technology, private rooms for every patient and amenities that provide comfort and expedite healing. As many surgeries and other medical treatment shift to outpatient care, not as many beds are needed, but the 28-acre Elk Grove campus has also been designed to accommodate additional expansions that may be required to meet future health care needs of the community.

The hospital will employ approximately 1,250 full-time workers and about 400 affiliated medical staff.

What services will the new hospital provide?

Dignity Health's Elk Grove community hospital will offer the following services:

  • Emergency Department
  • Operating Rooms
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Women’s Services
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Pharmacy
  • Laboratory
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
When will the new hospital open?

Dignity Health has more than 30 major hospital campuses in California and has profound expertise in master planning projects of all sizes; from new hospitals to major expansions, or growth of existing campuses. We understand that building a hospital takes time.

City entitlements and environmental approvals are already complete for the future medical campus, and we anticipate moving into design and permitting this year and then into the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development approval process next year. We anticipate finalizing this process and beginning construction around 2023 or 2024 and opening the hospital in 2026 or 2027.
