Press Release - City of Elk Grove to Consider a Temporary Moratorium on Residential and Commercial Evictions

Posted: 03/18/2020

Elk Grove, Calif. –The Elk Grove City Council will consider adopting a proposed urgency ordinance establishing a temporary moratorium on evictions and providing relief from the disconnection or late fees applied for utilities during a special meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m.

As proposed, the temporary ordinance will prohibit any eviction (unlawful detainer) proceedings against any other person within the City of Elk Grove as a result of a substantial decrease in household or business income or substantial out-of-pocket medical expenses caused by COVID-19. Further, the ordinance will limit the City from discontinuing service or charging late fees for solid waste or drainage services within the city.

Other utilities within the city, such as power and water, are provided by other public agencies and are not included in the ordinance. City officials are encouraging these providers to adopt similar measures to assist those Elk Grove residents most significantly impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.

If approved, the ordinance is expected to take effect immediately and remain in place through May 31, 2020, unless extended or terminated earlier by the City Council.

Members of the public are strongly encouraged to watch the meeting through the live broadcast available from the city’s website at www.elkgrovecity.org. Seating within the Chambers will be limited to ten guests. Members of the public will have the opportunity to email their comments or questions before or during the meeting to the City Clerk at jlindgren@elkgrovecity.org. View Live and Archived Broadcasts.
