Rendering of Cloud FountainThe City of Elk Grove will receive and install a 25 foot abstract steel sculpture on Monday, April 8, weather permitting. The piece, entitled “Cloud Fountain,” will mark the grand entrance to the 56 acre Civic Center and Park currently under construction at the corner of Civic Center Drive and Big Horn Boulevard.

The sculpture was created by Napa artist, Gordon Huether. Huether was awarded his first public art commission for the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute in 1989. Since then, he has received more than 70 public art commissions throughout the country for private corporations, airports, transportation centers, parking garages, hotels, universities, hospitals, recreation centers, civic buildings, libraries, and museums. Much of his work is inspired by the effects nature has on man-made materials.

“I was struck by the significance of the water elements throughout the Civic Center,” said Huether. “So I decided to explore the concept of water as central to our lives and experiences.”

The sculpture is the first of six artworks to be installed at the Civic Center site which will include an Aquatics Center, Senior and Community Center, a Veteran’s Hall and a promenade referred to as the Commons. “Cloud Fountain” will be celebrated when the Civic Center opens later this year.

Gordon Huether’s design was selected by the Elk Grove Arts Commission in a competitive process last year. Nan Mahon, Chair of the Elk Grove Arts Commission, is excited about the role that public art is playing in Elk Grove’s newest civic amenities.

“The Arts Commission is proud to be part of Elk Grove’s public art program. We hope that this is the beginning of a new artistic concept in our growing City.”
