Multicultural Committee hosts encore of culturally diverse festival October 30

For the second consecutive year, Elk Grove’s Multicultural Committee will host a celebration that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and celebrates the spirit of selfless service, helping the helpless, and good over evil. The Festival of Lights, a free event open to all ages, is scheduled on Tuesday, October 30, beginning at 6 p.m. at Laguna Town Hall.

Traditionally, the Festival of Lights is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Although this event marks different historical events and stories in each faith, Elk Grove’s festivities will include cultural dancing, colorful decorations, and refreshments.

In September 2016, and again in 2017, the City Council designated Elk Grove as “No Place for Hate.” Events like the Festival of Lights seek to promote education, awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the many different cultures represented in Elk Grove.
