Press Release - Elk Grove Moves Forward on Major Capital Projects

Posted: 03/19/2018

Elk Grove residents and visitors will have new places to gather, connect with four-legged friends, and travel between points A to B in 2019. The Elk Grove City Council recently approved contracts to start construction on three major capital improvement projects.

Elk Grove Animal Shelter

The City will construct a 22,894 square foot animal shelter facility on 2.8 acres of City-owned property located at the corner of Iron Rock Way and Union Park Way in the City’s southeast area. The facility will have the space necessary to house 66 dogs and 56 cats and will include outdoor animal yards, kennels, and space to offer a low-cost spay and neuter clinic. A $12.8 million construction contract was awarded to Robert E. Boyer Construction, Inc. of Sonora, CA on March 14. The total estimated cost of the project is $17.6 Million. Construction is anticipated to begin next month with an estimated completion in spring 2019.

Bradshaw/ Sheldon Road Intersection Improvements

To improve traffic flow and reduce flooding risks, the City will replace the existing bridge and four-way stop at the intersection of Sheldon Road and Bradshaw Road with a multi-lane roundabout and a new bridge. A $4.5 million construction contract was awarded to Granite Rock Company of San Jose, CA on March 14 to complete the work. The total project cost is estimated at $8.9 million. A full closure of the intersection is planned during the summer school break to expedite the project’s completion. Initial work is expected to begin next month with an anticipated completion late this summer.

Community Center

A groundbreaking event on Tuesday, March 20, will mark the start of construction on Elk Grove’s next major gathering place, a 32,187 square foot community center. The facility will feature a new senior center, the city’s first Veterans Hall, a café, and a main hall capable of accommodating celebrations of up to 500 guests. The facility is part of phase 1 construction improvements to the 20 acre site that will also be home to an Aquatics Center and an outdoor event space that connects the facilities referred to as the commons. The aquatics center and commons are currently under construction and expected to open later this summer. The facilities are expected to serve residents of the Laguna Ridge neighborhood and provide a city-wide and regional resource for events, competitions, and social gatherings.

The Council awarded a $19.1 Million construction contract to Bobo Construction of Elk Grove, CA on February 14, 2018. The total estimated cost of all Phase 1 improvements is $51 Million. Construction of the community center is scheduled for completion in summer 2019.

As a young city, we have been challenged with developing the infrastructure and amenities that many older cities already have in place,” explains Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly. “It’s meant years of planning and saving to get to where we are today. Starting construction is a significant step forward and means we will soon offer new and improved services to our community and its visitors.”

Construction updates on these and other high profile projects are posted to the city’s web site at http://www.elkgrovecity.org/city_hall/departments_divisions/public_works/capital_improvements/.
