RT and City of Elk Grove Promote New Blue Line to Cosumnes River College Light Rail Extension

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) and the City of Elk Grove are partnering to promote the newly-opened Blue Line to Cosumnes River College (CRC) light rail extension by offering a Free Ride Day on RT on Thursday, October 29, 2015, for Elk Grove residents.

“This is a great opportunity for Elk Grove residents to get familiar with light rail,” said Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis.  “The Blue Line is a convenient new option for our city’s commuters and I encourage residents to give it a try.”

To ride RT light rail trains and RT buses for free, Elk Grove residents will need to show a valid DMV Driver’s License or photo identification card with a city of Elk Grove address.  RT staff will be available at the Cosumnes River College and Franklin stations to assist customers from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 29.  Mayor Davis and Elk Grove’s transit staff will be on-site at the Cosumnes River College Station at 6:30 a.m. to greet passengers and share information about Elk Grove’s RiderWatch, a program like “Neighborhood Watch” for light rail passengers.

For Elk Grove commuters, weekday service on the Blue Line begins with the first train departing from the Cosumnes River College Station at 4:56 a.m. and ends with the last train arriving at the Cosumnes River College Station at 11:51 p.m.  Light rail trains operate every 15 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes in the evening and on weekends.

The Blue Line to CRC opened on August 24, 2015, and extended RT’s light rail system by 4.3 miles from the former terminus at Meadowview Road to Cosumnes River College in south Sacramento.  The extension features four new stations (Morrison Creek, Franklin, Center Parkway and Cosumnes River College); over 2,700 park-and-ride spaces; pedestrian bridges connecting to the Franklin and Center Parkway stations; and a bus/light rail transit center at CRC.  The Morrison Creek Station will open in 2017 when future development occurs in the area.

With the opening of the Blue Line extension, RT now operates 43 miles of light rail serving Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and Folsom.  The light rail system – Blue Line, Gold Line and Green Line – includes 54 stations and 22 park-and-ride lots.

The Franklin Station, located on Franklin Boulevard at Cosumnes River Boulevard (4625 Cosumnes River Boulevard), is a park-pay-and-ride lot (668 parking spaces).  The daily parking fee is $1.  Daily parking passes can be purchased (cash, credit and debit card) at the parking payment kiosk located near the station platform.  RT monthly parking passes are available for $15 and can be purchased online and at select retail outlets.

The Center Parkway Station, located west of Center Parkway on Cosumnes River Boulevard (6349 Cosumnes River Boulevard), is a walk-on station with a passenger drop-off area.

The Cosumnes River College Station, located at the east entrance of Cosumnes River College (8370 Bruceville Road), features a four-story parking garage (2,016 parking spaces).  The CRC daily parking fee is $2.  CRC daily parking permits can be purchased (cash, credit or debit card) at parking kiosks located on each floor of the parking garage.

RT monthly parking passes are accepted at the CRC parking garage.  RT monthly parking passes are available for $15 and can be purchased online and at select retail outlets.
