Animal Licenses

QWhen does an animal need to be licensed with the City of Elk Grove?

AIf you own a dog or cat you are required to have the animal licensed. The animal must be licensed at four (4) months of age or older. Any new residence to the City of Elk Grove has thirty (30) days to license their animal. The animal must be current on its rabies vaccination and you must provide proof. Also, if your animal is spayed or neutered please provide proof.

QWhere can I get an application for an animal license?

QWhere do I turn my animal license application in at?

AYou may bring your application, along with your payment, to the City’s Cashier Department located at:

They are open Monday thru Friday 8am to 5 pm closed weekends and all City recognized holidays. They accept all forms of payment including cash, check, or credit card.

Rabies Vaccinations

QWhy does my dog or cat required to be vaccinated against the rabies virus?

AFor the health of the animal and the community the City of Elk Grove requires that all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against the rabies virus.

QShould I report an animal bite?

AYes, immediately to your physician and to Elk Grove Animal Services (916) 687-3023, and If possible, please, attempt to contain the animal or locate the owner.

Loose Animals

QHow do I report a loose animal?

To report a stray animal running loose in your neighborhood, you may call the Elk Grove Police Department non-emergency number at (916) 714-5115. An Animal Services Officer will be dispatched out to patrol, locate, and attempt to contain the animal. When reporting a loose animal please have the location where the animal was last seen running loose along with a description of the animal.

QWhat can I do if feral cats keep coming on my property?

AYou may humanely trap the animal when it is on your property. Once contained in either a trap or pet carrier, you may contact our office at (916) 687-3023 to have the animal picked up and removed.

QWhere do I report a lost pet, or get help finding my lost pet?

ACall the Sacramento SPCA (916) 383-7387 x9130. Visit the City of County Shelters, search on www.Petfinders.com or www.missingpet.net. Also check with local veterinarian faculties.

Animal Nuisance (Barking Dogs)

QWhat can I do if my dog barks all of the time?

ADogs can suffer from isolation, fears and separation anxiety, and they can be protective and territorial by nature.

To reduce barking caused by these factors consider, walking or exercising your dog each day, take an obedience class with your dog, play with your dog, or have a friend check on your dog if you are away.

QHow do I report an animal nuisance in my neighborhood?

ATo file a complaint about an animal nuisance in your neighborhood please contact our office at (916) 687-3023. You will be asked to provide the correct address of the animal, along your name, address and phone number. At the same time the noise nuisance courtesy notice is mailed out to the property location of the animal, a packet of information including logs will be mailed out to the reporting party. An Animal Service Officer will begin the investigation into the animal nuisance, as soon as our office receives two logs filled out by two neighbors with different addresses for the same animal nuisance.

Microchip Questions

QWhere can I get a microchip ID for my pet?

AThe Sacramento SPCA offers microchip clinics for $20.00. Please contact them at (916) 383-7387 for additional information, such as, times, dates, and prices. Additionally, most veterinarian hospitals and local shelters offer microchip clinics, but you would need to contact them direct for further information about their individual services.

QAm I required to microchip my dog or cat?

AAn additional requirement to the animal license application has been added to the City of Elk Grove ordinance, which requires all animal license applications to include a copy of the microchip registration card for that dog or cat. Currently, licensed dogs or cats are exempt from the micro-chip procedure for up to one (1) year or the next licensing period, whichever is first, after the adoption of the ordinance codified in this chapter.
